ReplyDeleteI had no idea just how many sposies each baby adds to a landfill. That is insane!
ReplyDeleteI love to cloth diaper because it makes me feel like I'm doing the best I can for my baby and the earth. The super cute designs are certainly a nice perk though!

ReplyDeleteI love cloth diapering because I feel like I'm doing the best thing I can for my son...plus they're so much cuter than disposables!
ReplyDeleteI follow you on twitter @madilynsmama.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that the same chemical that was BANNED from tampons in the 80's is in disposable diapers that are used on babies multiple times a day! That's worse than tampons, you only wear tampons for a week a month!
ReplyDeleteMy fav color is Zinnia!

I love that Isla can have natural materials next to her most sensitive skin and because of that be comfy and happy while being sustainable!

I hope it's ok that I copy/paste what I learned. I had no idea!!!! NASTY!
ReplyDeleteFrom GCM website:
ALL disposable diapers contain an ingredient called sodium polyacrylate. This turns water (or in our case, urine) into gel like crystals. The FDA banned this toxic chemical from tampons in 1985 because it was dangerous to humans. They found it linked to Toxic Shock Syndrome, as well as other diseases, yeast growth, skin rashes and irritations. They however continue to use it in paper diapers because it is the only ingredient that can absorb liquid so fast... making a thin paper diaper do it’s job. Without this ingredient, you might as well wrap your child in a paper towel.

ReplyDeleteI knew about the chemical in the diapers, but I didn't know that it was banned in other things!
ReplyDeleteOne thing I love about cloth diapering is there are NO blowouts! Which is why I have decided to switch. LOL

What I love about cloth: that my baby's chemical-free bum is swaddled in nothing but natural materials. And I love that my hubby has embraced CD from day one and runs around telling everyone how great it is!

i can't believe how many sposies go into landfills per year, nor that they contain an FDA banned substance in other contexts. unbelievable. i'm proud to say that we've only added about 10-15 to those billions, as Z has been in nothing but cloth since she got home from the hospital.

Ok, and here's what I learned: I had NO idea that the nasty gel stuff that they get on them from the sposies (the sodium polyacrylate) is the stuff that they banned from tampons. Ew!! Up with cloth diapering! :)

ReplyDeleteI actually haven't officially started cloth diapering yet. I just purchased my first diapers and they are in the wash, now! I am excited to never have to buy another disposable again!
ReplyDeleteI learned that you recommend 18-20 diapers for older babies. If I like the ones I bought, then I am almost there! If not, I'll have to come here and choose some others :)
